FREE TIME &HOBBIES
FUMIKO
I have to study really hard for school.That means I haven't got much free time for hobbies.When I can,I enjoy reading manga comics.I also love singing and I listen to music on my way to school.I only watch TV when there are interesting programmes on.I think sport is also very important if you want to be healthy,so I also play tennis once a week.At weekends, I sometimes invite my friends to my home or I go to theirs.We really like making cakes together.

I like doing a few things in my free time.I don't think my hobbies are that different from the ones other boys or girls have,though.I don't mind chatting online,but I prefer watching TV series.I don't often read, because it's boring. I love watching football on TV,but I don't do much sport at the moment.I think I might start swimming again.My mum says young people should do exercise to keep fit.

My parents play in a band so there is always music in our house. I started playing the piano when I was six after I heard a very young girl play at a concert. She was just five years old but she was as good as an adult professional pianist. My first concert was at the age of nine. I'll never forget how scared I was. But once I was at the piano, I relaxed and just thought about the music.

My parents are both doctors, but they really enjoy listening to music. My mother played the piano when she was young,so she asked me if I wanted to learn to play something. I chose the violin but it isn't easy. Sometimes I get angry when I can't play the right way. I don't know if I'll keep playing it. I also play tennis three times a week and it's a bit tiring doing everything, so I guess I'll have to choose.

Last April,I went on a six-day scout camp near our city. I don't like sleeping in tents,so I didn't really want to go at first but my mum insisted.Fifteen other girls went on the trip and we were divided into four groups.My group's tent was quite big and we had a lot of fun chatting (all night).In the daytime we did projects in the forest and we walked a lot.I want to go again next year!

I'vestarted doing a climbing course at weekends.I heard about it from my cousin.He's a really sporty person and he loves climbing.I had my first lesson yesterday and it was great.The course is every Tuesday and Saturday afternoon from 3 to 5 p.m.and I'm really enjoying it.We climb on a special wall in the sports centre,but the instructor says that in the summer he'll take us to a park near here where there are some very high rocks.

I think that we study more subjects now than in the past.I quite like having a lot of subjects at school,though,and I enjoy learning most of them.In my opinion,the most useful ones are those which help you to find a job.Of course, subjects like information technology and science are important to prepare you for today's world,but you also need to know English well to talk and listen to people around you.

I love subjects that teach me about the world around me, like science and geography.I also think that we should learn about the past.History can help us to understand the world today and perhaps to find answers to modern problems. However,there are some subjects I don't think we should learn at school. Greek and Latin can be interesting,but I think that you should study them at university because they are difficult and many students my age find them boring.

Most people don't like classical languages and think Greek and Latin are not as important as information technology or maths.I think they can do a lot to help you in today's world, though.You need to use your brain to learn them and in today's world that's important if you want to find a good job. I love going to my grandmother's country house by the lake.I usually go on holiday in June as soon as the school summer holiday starts.I can do so many interesting things there,such as walking or cycling near the lake.I usually stay with my grandmother for two months,because my parents both work in summer.I also like staying there because it's cooler than in town.And nobody can cook as well as my grandma!
